-If by AU you mean a new timeline and new plot and not a different take on an established timeline, I'd say important things to nail.... probably why they have MS, or more specifically, knowing what circumstances arose that MS or whatever moniker you give them are at the level of use they are at. Example, Gundam X has them, but a devastating war damaged the planet and MS were not nearly as common anymore, lost to the sands. Similar in Turn A, the apocalyptic event forced humanity back to the stone age more or less and worked their way back to vaguely 20s-inspired industrialization and are rediscovering the old technologies. UC has them developed as military materiel originally patterned after and inspired by WWII, and continuing forward as military technology did in our world. G Gundam had it as a development to help 'civilize' previous struggles for dominance and control over other nations, reducing the wars to a tournament of martial arts prowess, with each nation outfitting a champion with an advanced Mobile Fighter to potentially win their nation sovereignty over the collective nation colonies. Hope I'm making sense. Long story short, meditate on why your AU would have MS, and how the circumstances of that world and it's historical events/discoveries/triumps/mishaps may have shaped the direction and focus of the technology and possibly distinguish it from existing AUs.-
-Well, Hathaway's Flash will probably be violent, but I'd say the Gustav Karl and Penelope and so on probably go a bit past bulky or hefty on the scale.-
